Celebrate Culture: January is a key month in African-American history. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves in the Confederate states. In addition, members of our community may observe Bodhi Day, Makar Sankranti, World Religion Day, Tu B’shevat, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Armenian Martyrs Day, Holocaust Remembrance Day, and International Day of Commemoration in the month of January. As we look ahead to February, it is important to note that the month is devoted to the celebration of and tribute to African American History.
