Q&A with VFX Artist John Dykstra, ASC

Join the ArtCenter Film Department as they welcome VFX Supervisor John Dykstra for a Q&A. Dykstra has had a hand in the creation of some of cinema’s most iconic and unforgettable films. As the special effects lead on the original STAR WARS, he played a pivotal role in designing visuals for the lightsabers, space dogfights, and Force powers for the screen. He is one of the original founders of the famed Industrial Light & Magic visual effects company.

His legendary craftsmanship can be seen in iconic film such as SPIDER-MAN; X-MEN: FIRST CLASS; GODZILLA; SHAZAM!, and ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD. In addition to being VFX supervisor on dozens of film classics, John Dykstra has also served as producer on shows such as BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.

He’s won Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects for STAR WARS and for SPIDER-MAN 2.  He also won a Technical Achievement Oscar for the development of the Dykstraflex Camera.
