Photo and Imaging students who took the Spring 2017 course SNAP 2 exhibited their work in a gala on May 6, 2017. The class was in collaboration with the Pasadena Art Alliance, who also sponsored the gala.
Class projects paired each student with two to three patrons from the Pasadena Art Alliance, and the term culminated in the unveiling of these portraits.

Los Angeles 2016 by Seung Jong Lee
Seung Jong Lee ('20) was announced as this year's winner of the Korea National Award by Sony World Photography Awards. Congrats, SJ!
According to its press release, the Sony World Photography Awards is the largest photography competition in the world. The National Awards is a global program open to all photographers and abilities. It aims to find the best single photograph taken by a local photographer in 66 countries. SJ Lee took first place for his photograph above.
SJ is currently a second-term student originally from Seoul. In his interview with Sony, he said:
The city is always bustling and filled with countless lights and colors. But behind the richness, there is so much loneliness, which is derived from the relationships. Sometimes the relationship itself makes us lonely.

From Celia Sachez's series Devoted.
We are happy for alum Celia Sanchez ('16) for this well-deserved write-up in Upworthy. The story features Celia's series that challenges conventional depictions of motherhood.
As a young mom, Celia Sanchez felt like an outsider.
Sanchez, who became a mom 11 years ago at age 23, had many run-ins with fellow parents that she won't soon forget.
"When I would take my children to day care, I felt kind of ... like I didn't look like the other moms," Sanchez said. "They were much older than me. I just felt kind of separated from them. I would get a lot of 'Oh you're so young to be a mom,' 'You don't really look like a mom,' and I always thought that was a silly thing to say: 'Oh you don't look like a mom.'"
Mary Trunk has a new documentary out and it is now available to stream on Kanopy.
Behind the domestic curtain of motherhood, where the creative impulse can flourish or languish, are four women determined to make a go of it. Filmed over seven years, LOST IN LIVING, confronts the contradictions inherent in personal ambition and self-sacrifice, female friendship and mental isolation, big projects and dirty dishes. The complex realities of family life unfold in this documentary film about the messy intersection of motherhood and artistic expression.
Mary is a Los Angeles-based artist and teaches the class From Still to Motion at ArtCenter.
From Gustavo Soriano's Internet Encounters
Gustavo Soriano ('18) has a new series, Internet Encounters, and it was featured in Juxtapoz Magazine.
For his series, Soriano has paired Craiglist causal encounter listings of females taken on their phone, with a portrait of the individual taken by the photographer. The result of these photos side-by-side create two different appearances of the person and perhaps leave the viewer to question their initial impression with the first image.

From Mona Kuhn's Ácido Dorado
Mona Kuhn has an exhibition currently in Madrid:
the series Ácido dorado, a work which she began in 2013 in a secluded modernistic style mansion designed by the architect Robert Stone, in the Joshua Tree National Park in California, and in addition to the usual dialogue between the human body and its environment she expands her scope of interest and projects her look towards the desert landscape, taking in the flora and the intense sunlight producing all manner of reflections and transparencies, leading us to abstract photography for the first time.
The show will be on view until November 8, 2016 in Galeria Pilar Serra. More info here.

The Billboard Creative is excited to announce the opening of submissions for its 2016 Los Angeles Billboard Exhibition.
The Billboard Creative (TBC) is a nonprofit that produces public art shows on billboards in Los Angeles. In 2015 they put up a record number of billboards - 48 - and appeared in such news outlets as “Huffington Post”, “Musee Magazine,” KCRW's “Art Talk,” and the “Los Angeles Times.”
"We are excited to open the call for submissions for our 2016 exhibition. Selected work will be displayed on billboards throughout Los Angeles. Imagine your art viewed on a massive scale, by tens of thousands of Angelenos on their daily commutes. Public art displayed in a quintessential Los Angeles medium."
Mona Kuhn will be returning this year to curate the exhibition.
