Heather Sten - The 30

The 30 is recognized throughout the professional photography industry as a “go-to outlet to discover up-and-coming photographers” (TIME, 2015), and as a platform that helps emerging photographers grow their careers. Each year, The 30 are selected through a nomination and jurying process that includes the input of established photographers, photography editors, art directors, curators and other photography industry leaders. Heather Sten, ArtCenter Photoraphy and Imaging Alumn, has been selected as one of The 30.

Sten says one key to her early career has been learning to balance being a nice person and standing her ground when she needs to. It’s been challenging to learn to say no, for instance, and to ask clients for more money. “Saying no is a huge privilege, but sometimes it will get you more work that will serve you,” Sten explains. “Being a person of color and a woman in this industry, I’ve sometimes been made to feel like I should feel lucky to get work at all, which was oftentimes underpaid. Asking for more money should be the norm—to ask someone to give what you believe is your worth is existential and necessary all at once.”

Melodie McDaniel - Lets the light in

“I strive to be authentic, compassionate and empathic in all of my projects.” explains Melodie McDaniel, ArtCenter Photography and Imaging Alumna (BFA 91).

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, and raised in Los Angeles, McDaniel sees a common thread in all of her work. “I try to capture the ultimate expression of the idea behind each project,” she says. She’s photographed for magazines that include Rolling Stone, Vogue Hommes and Time. She traveled to Rwanda and Ethiopia to photograph girls for the Nike Foundation nonprofit Girl Effect. She’s directed commercials for companies such as Nike, Miller Genuine Draft and Facebook, and music videos for artists like Madonna.

After ArtCenter, McDaniel started out creating photos for album artwork and music editorials for bands and artists, including Patti Smith, R.E.M. and Pharrell Williams. To date, she’s created more than 200 advertising campaigns, including a PSA for Nike featuring Michael Jordan, and campaigns for Chrysler and Levi’s. Her film work includes directing a short film for Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), a nonprofit that provides after-school programs to underserved youth.

She is a featured artist in ArtCenter’s Dot Magazine. One of McDaniel’s current projects include a series of black-and-white portraits and candid photos of the after-school equestrian program Compton Jr. Posse (CJP). CPJ is an alternative for youth to gangs and violence, founded by now-retired Mayisha Akbar at her ranch in Richland Farms—a rural area of Compton.

Paul Jasmin - The Man Who Captured 50 Years of L.A. Subcultures

Paul Jasmin_2020.png

C Magazine, Guide to California Style & Culture, includes a feature article about longtime ArtCenter Faculty member Paul Jasmin, in their September 2020 issue.

The article captures Jasmin’s ideology as he reflect on his 50 year career. “Jazz embodies a [time in] Los Angeles when there was still a Schwab’s, when the Chateau was full of grifters and drifters, and prostitutes were everywhere along Sunset Boulevard,” says Lisa Love, the former West Coast editor at Vogue and Jasmin’s friend of more than 30 years. “It’s a romantic notion of a worn and sticky side of L.A. life. It’s not Beverly Hills. It’s the Los Angeles with the lone palm tree bending behind chain-link over a vacant concrete pool.”
